Ready to Travel with Your Pet?
People generally enjoy traveling and discovering new things. For pet owners, it’s very important that our furry friends can come along. But what do you need to travel with them around Europe?
The answer includes a Pet Passport, or officially, an EU Pet Passport. This official EU document applies to dogs, cats, and ferrets, ensuring they meet the requirements for travel within the EU and certain other countries. Read on for more information!
What is an EU Pet Passport?
A Pet Passport, like a human passport, serves as an official identification document when traveling. For travel within the EU with your dog, cat, or ferret, an EU Pet Passport is a prerequisite.
This document facilitates non-commercial travel (like holidays) and is also used for import/export within the EU or countries adhering to EU regulations.
Additionally, the passport primarily functions as identification and proof of valid rabies vaccination for entry into many non-European countries, although specific country requirements may vary.

Issuance of the Pet Passport
To get an EU Pet Passport, you must visit an authorized veterinarian, as only they can issue them in Denmark. The only task for you as the owner is to sign the document; the vet handles the rest.
Key Requirements: Your pet (dog, cat, or ferret) MUST be microchipped *before* or at the same time as their rabies vaccination. A valid rabies vaccination is essential for the passport to be issued and valid for travel.
Microchipping Explained
Microchipping is a mandatory requirement for dogs in Denmark (before 8 weeks old) and is necessary for issuing an EU Pet Passport for dogs, cats, and ferrets. It provides a permanent, unique identification number linked to your details in a registry like the Danish Dog Register.
Rabies Vaccination: Crucial for Travel
Rabies (hydrophobia) is a serious viral disease affecting the nervous system. While rare in many parts of Europe, vaccination is mandatory for EU pet travel to prevent its spread. The virus is typically transmitted via saliva from bites, but also potentially scratches or licks on broken skin. Ensuring your pet has a valid rabies vaccination recorded in their Pet Passport is vital.
Important Timing: The primary rabies vaccination must be administered at least 21 days (3 weeks) before travel for it to be considered valid. All vaccination details are recorded in the Pet Passport.
Pet Passport Price and Process
The price can vary depending on included services. At MyPeterinarian, the cost for issuing the EU Pet Passport *including* the rabies vaccination is 1474 DKK.
Getting the passport is usually quick. The vet reads your pet’s microchip ID, confirms vaccination status, fills out the passport, and you sign it. As the ID must be verified, your pet needs to be present.
To make it easier, we offer home visits! We can issue the passport and administer vaccinations conveniently at your home.
Passport Validity & Old Formats
An EU Pet Passport remains valid as long as the rabies vaccination recorded within it is kept up-to-date through timely revaccinations. You only need a new passport if the current one is full or damaged.
If you have an older format passport (issued before December 29, 2014, often called a “dog passport”), it is still valid for the lifetime of the pet, provided the rabies vaccination status within it is current.
